Clinical Strategy Watch (Vol 4, No. 10, May 2006): The Hospital Elder Life Program was featured in an article entitled, "Delirium: Programs aim to build awareness, reduce incidence and improve outcomes", published in the May 2006 Clinical Strategy Watch (Vol. 4, No. 10). While delirium often goes undetected by clinicians, the condition can have a major impact on patient independence, increasing mortality risk and inflating costs. The article discusses how HELP pre-empts delirium through interventions. HELP targets six risk areas with standardized interventions. Fifty-four (54) hospitals worldwide are currently implementing the HELP program. Analysis of the program published in NEJM in 1999 confirmed the HELP program's effectiveness.
