Tools for Planning
Business Planning Manual
The HELP Business Planning Manual provides background information on delirium and HELP which will assist you in making your case to your administration. HELP has been proven to improve outcomes for older patients while also saving hospitals money. These cost savings should be utilized when presenting HELP to your administration, particularly during these difficult economic times. This manual should be used in conjunction with the tools below in order to align your program with the specific goals of your institution using your own data. The time frame for developing the business case depends on the resources and time available to develop the business plan and the requirements of your institution. Realistically it takes an average of 3 to 6 months.
Business Planning Workbooks
This Excel workbook will allow you to project the patient volume and staffing needs based upon demographic data from your institution. The only sheet that should be completed is the data collection sheet. Once the data collection sheet is complete, the other sheets will be automatically completed.
Business Tools Workbook: This workbook should be used by sites who do not have easy access to specific age-related data such as actual number of admissions > 70 years old, patients > 70 years old with a length of stay greater than 2 days, costs associated with the targeted patient group (variable costs), and length of stay. It has locked formulas in the data collection sheet that are based upon the Yale research.
Business Tools Workbook Unlocked: This workbook should only be used by sites that through their institution’s data management system are able to get exact data about the number or percentage of admitted patients > 70 years old. There are no formulas to calculate patient data within the data sheet.
HELP PowerPoint Presentation
This presentation can be customized by a site to reflect local hospital circumstances. The presentation will assist sites with presenting HELP within the institution.
Business Case Template
This template can be used to create and present the business plan for starting a HELP site. However, if your institution has a specific form or format, then that should be followed. The template has instructions embedded within the document and for the most part should be self-explanatory. Key points to remember when writing the business plan: keep it brief and to the point, solicit the support of hospital personnel who either track or are responsible for the information you are gathering, and make sure that you align the plan with the hospital’s priorities and expectations of new programs.
Building Local Support
If you are planning to introduce HELP to your organization, you will need a plan to develop support for it. Although HELP's success has been proven, implementing it in a new hospital requires hard work and support from key stakeholders. Based on real-world experience, this article discusses what you can expect and provides practical advice for how to succeed.
